Bicycling is an activity beloved by many. It offers outdoor recreation, bountiful exercise, and it’s a great alternative to standard modes of transportation like driving. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of bicycling is the opportunity it provides to indulge in scenic beauty. Among the most breathtaking bike routes around the world include:
Japan’s Shimanami Kaido
This Asian bike route is rich with small, wonderfully scenic islands in Hiroshima. Bikers can choose to ride alongside the beautiful vistas that run parallel to the Seto Inland Sea or revel in the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea National Park. The surrounding water landscapes make it a pleasurable ride from start to finish.
Great Divide Mountain Bike Route
“Big” is the word that comes to mind when describing this North American bike route. Coming in at an impressive 2,734 miles long, the Great Divide Mountain bike route sure packs an exercise punch. From the mountainside views to the wastelands of the Great Basin, this route speaks to the divine nature lover.
Australia’s Munda Biddi Trail

Dispersed all throughout Europe, the North Sea Cycle Route, also known as Euro Velo Route 12, runs from the northern edge of Scotland’s Shetland Islands along the coasts of surrounding European countries including Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. This multifaceted route includes dynamic trails that are designed for the intrepid bike enthusiast.
England’s The South Downs Way Route
This route spans across a modestly sized 99 mile trail. Bikers can expect to experience the charmingly beautiful English countryside while pedaling through the lush grounds. While this trail may be relatively small in comparison to the others, don’t let its size deceive you. Approximately 14,000 feet of riding consists of uphill pedaling. This route is definitely not for the fainthearted.
La Ruta de los Conquistadores
La Ruta de los Conquistadores, located in Costa Rica, runs from the Pacific to Caribbean coast. Bikers can expect to undergo mud paths, rainforests, and coffee plantations. Juan de Cavallon, 16th-century Spanish conqueror for which the trail was named, rode this trail and bikers often like to follow his path and retrace his steps.
